How to travel fashionably

Travel Fashionably – A Girls Guide

Posted by Jill Rossini on

Fall's almost here, time to kick back and/or head off for some much-needed RNR. Whether you’re headed to foreign shores, taking a road trip across states, or even enjoying a nice little ‘staycation,’ doing so in style is the only way to travel fashionably.

Luggage
Your choice of luggage will first be governed by the destination and duration of your trip, and secondly by budget. Whether a long or short haul, there’s no excuse for a drab old case, unless it’s vintage!  If you can afford it, spend for something light and bright to get you in the holiday spirit at the very moment you start to pack! If you can’t replace your luggage, then customize it with some colorful ribbons tied around the handle to make it easier to spot on the baggage carousel. And make sure it has wheels! Roll out.

Outfit
Again, the clothes you travel in will need to suit your plans, but if you’re going somewhere warmer than where you set off from, venture out in a maxi dress with a denim jacket, or pair it with a versatile and neutral cardigan to keep the chill off on the airplane. If it’s a cooler climate you’re after, wear light multi-layers and take a thicker jacket (or fluffy oversized cardigan) to stow overhead for when you land.

Put serious thought into your footwear; while your favorite heels may look great, your swollen toes won’t thank you for them after a 6-hour flight, and you never know when you might have to run to that boarding gate! Keep your accessories simple as you may need to remove them for the metal detector.

Self-care
Flying, especially long-haul, can wreak havoc on your body. Dehydration is a common problem, as the humidity in the air drops much lower than you’re used to, leaving you with dry skin, eyes, nose and throat. To combat this, moisturize liberally beforehand,  and drink plenty of water, and-hate to say it- avoid alcohol! Another great trick is to use a hydrating mist during the flight. I love the Kiehl’s In Flight Refreshing Mist

Haircare
Travelling light is critical if you want to avoid extra baggage charges that only eat into your holiday spending money before you’ve left the airport. If you’re going away for a couple of weeks, buy shower gel, shampoo, and conditioners once you arrive.  For shorter stays, transfer smaller amounts of  your usual hair and skincare products into travel-sized bottles.

Holiday Wear
We know a capsule wardrobe is a key to successful packing, but what is it? Start by aiming for versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched with several items other items, and are also easy to wash and quick to dry. Shoes can take up a lot of room, so limit yourself to one pair of each heel, sandal and flat to see you through the vaca. It is possible to travel fashionably and not travel with tons of luggage.

Packing

Packing is an art form in and of itself, but if you follow some basic rules your clothes and toiletries will arrive intact and unrumpled. Rolling your clothes will prevent wrinkles, but if you must travel with something that creases easily, then fold it layered with tissue paper! Pack heavier items at the bottom of your case, and use items such as socks, underwear, and nightwear to wrap toiletries and jewelry.

And there you have it. You’re ready to hit your vacation destination in style. Have fun, and we’ll see you when you get home. And if you are in fact in for the staycation package, then consider these tips food for thought for future national and international travel. Bon Voyage!
